So… You’re finally ready to jump on the Pinterest marketing bandwagon for your blog.
You’ve heard from other entrepreneurs how amazing the platform is for driving boatloads of FREE traffic and sales.
But here’s the thing.
Pinterest is confusing AF.
You don’t have the slightest clue on how to come up with a pinning strategy, get followers, AND convert those followers into website visitors.
… Which is the whole point of using Pinterest, right?
So what should you do?
Stick to the regular social media platforms, like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter?
Or, quit whining about how you don’t understand the platform and make a move that will have a BIG impact on your online business?
Assuming you chose the right option (aka the second one), then you can rest easy.
Because I’m about to walk you through ev-er-y-thingggg you need to know about Pinterest marketing.
And by the end of this post, you’ll have a kickass Pinterest strategy that will drive TONS of free traffic to your site on auto-pilot.

Now, before we dive into this complete guide for beginners, let’s go over the basics.
Why You Should Use Pinterest To Market Your Online Business
If you’re new to the whole “Pinterest marketing” thing, you might be confused about all the hype.
You’re probably wondering:
“Wait, people still use Pinterest?”
“I thought Pinterest was just for recipes and DIY projects?”
“Isn’t Pinterest just for moms who have nothing better to do with their time?”
Pinterest is a freakin’ gold mine for entrepreneurs who are struggling to get consistent traffic.
In fact, 300 million people are using Pinterest every single month and 84% of these users go on the platform when they’re trying to decide what to buy (Source: Pinterest).
Even better, once you share a pin on Pinterest, it can continue to bring you traffic for years to come!
This is because Pinterest is mainly a search engine and if you keyword your pins properly, they will work their way up to the top of the search feed (just like Google, except with pictures!).
Pinterest is now responsible for bringing in 90% of our blog traffic and it’s largely all being done on auto-pilot!
You should be.
Now that you know why you should use Pinterest, let’s walk through the steps of setting up your account.
How to Set Up a Pinterest Business Account
This part is fairly simple, so I’ll keep it short and to the point.
Just follow each of the steps below and you’ll be good to go!
Step 1: Create a Pinterest Business account
First, you’ll want to hop on over to Pinterest and click ‘create a business account’ and follow the instructions.
If you already have a personal Pinterest account, then you will need to convert your account to a business one.
Step 2: Set up your profile
Next, it’s time to edit your profile.
Be sure to include all important information, such as your display name and profile bio.
Step 3: Claim your website
Claiming your website signals to Pinterest that you own content associated with your domain.
So, be sure to click on the ‘claim’ button in your settings and follow the steps for whichever platform your website uses (you can find instructions for popular website hosts here).
Step 4: Enable rich pins
Enabling rich pins on your account will ensure that Pinterest pulls up metadata for your pins.
Metadata, which includes headlines, authors, post excerpts, pricing, and even recipes, provides your viewers with a “richer” experience, hence the name.
To apply for rich pins, visit the Rich Pins Validator and follow the listed steps.
Step 5: Set up your Pinterest boards
Now, we’re getting to the fun part… Setting up your Pinterest boards!
You can think of boards like ‘buckets’ or categories for specific topics.
Every pin you save will have to be categorized into a board, so it’s important to only create boards that are specific to your niche.
For example, if you were in the online business niche, you could set up the following boards:
- Online Business Tips for Beginners
- How to Start an Online Business
- Make Money Online
- Online Business Tools
- Social Media Marketing Tips
- Entrepreneur Tips
Get the idea?
Hot Tip: Use relevant keywords as your board titles and work them into your board descriptions too! This will help your boards get found in the search engine.
Hot Tip x2: Make one board that is titled with your website name and only save your original pins to this board!
Step 6: Save a few pins to your boards
Now that you’ve created some killer Pinterest boards, you’re ready to start filling those bad boys up with some eye-catching pins that your audience will love!
There are a few important things to consider here though:
- Pin a mix of content between your own stuff and other people’s. Re-pinning highly engaging pins will help boost your own engagement when you’re just starting out.
- Be sure to check the URL of the pins you’re saving (before saving them) to ensure it’s not spam or a broken link.
- Avoid going on a “pinning frenzy” and re-pinning a bunch of pins all in one go. This might result in Pinterest banning you for “spammy behavior”. Stick with pinning around 5-10 pins a day for your first few weeks and gradually increase this number over time.
- Do not save the same pins to the same board more than once every 4-6 months. Again, it’s spammy. You can, however, change the pin image while keeping the URL the same, as that’s considered a brand new pin.

Step 7: Make your first pin using Canva
In order for you to drive traffic to your own website, you’ll need to create eye-catching pins that link back to your domain.
You can create these images in just a few minutes using Canva.
Be sure to follow a 2:3 ratio (e.g. 600px x 900px) and include the following elements in your design:
- Headline text
- Your branding (logo or website)
- A high-quality image/background
Once you’ve finished making your design, just click the little red button on the top right and add your image, title, pin description, board, and destination link.
You’ve just saved your very first pin!
Before you leave, I want to share a few quick Pinterest best-practices with you that will set you up for mad success.
Pinterest Best-Practices for Getting Tons of Free Traffic on Auto-Pilot
Setting up your Pinterest account is only half the battle, the next (and arguably, most important) step is learning how to pin like a pro.
To help you out, I’ve put together a few Pinterest best-practices for you.
1. Treat Pinterest like a search engine, not a social media platform.
One of the best ways to succeed on Pinterest is to embrace the fact that it’s not social media (aka likes and comments don’t matter).
Rather, it’s a visual search engine.
This means that when you keyword your content properly and optimize it for search engines, your content can be shown to users for years to come!
Here are a few places where you should use relevant keywords:
- Pin titles
- Pin descriptions (Include 2-5 hashtags)
- Text on images (Yes, Pinterest can read your images!)
- Board titles
- Board descriptions
- Your display name
- Your profile bio
Curious about how to find keywords? Just type something into the search bar on Pinterest and it will give you a bunch of suggestions!
2. Create multiple pins for every blog post using different images and headlines.
Remember how I told you not to pin the same image to the same board more than once every 4-6 months?
The trick to get around this is to change up the image (and keep the destination link the same).
Pinterest will treat this as a brand new pin, meaning you can save it to the same board you shared the other image too!
This is also a great hack for testing different images, headlines, and CTA’s with your audience.
I’d recommend creating about 2-5 different pin images for each of your blog posts to give you the best chance of having a pin go viral.
3. Only pin content that your target audience would love.
If your niche is yoga for beginners, you shouldn’t be pinning images on the “Cheesiest Mac and Cheese Recipe You’ll Ever Try”.
No matter how amazing that sounds…
Because your audience followed you to learn specifically about yoga!
They don’t want to see mac and cheese recipes, dog training tips, makeup tutorials, or any of that other stuff!
So, even if it’s interesting to you, try your best to ONLY pin content that serves your audience.
4. Use a scheduling tool to pin on auto-pilot.
Here’s the tip you’ve been waiting for.
How can you get consistent traffic from Pinterest without spending hours a day finding and saving pins to your profile?
By using a scheduling tool, that’s how.
In order to kill it on Pinterest, you’ll eventually need to be pinning anywhere from 20-50 pins a day… EVERY day!
And yes, these pins do need to be spaced out properly for maximum engagement.
